Overview
Charging downtime is shaped by more than charger speed. Detours, queues, vehicle handovers and charging outside natural idle periods can all reduce availability. Flexible charging should therefore be assessed against the fleet schedule, not as an isolated equipment decision.
Downtime-planning checklist
- Track when each vehicle returns, departs and remains parked.
- Record route distance and typical end-of-shift battery level.
- Prioritise vehicles with the tightest next-departure window.
- Compare depot, public and mobile options for each operating period.
- Measure travel, waiting and charging time separately during a pilot.
PVG-EV pilot context
PVG-EV is collecting fleet operating details to understand where flexible charging may deserve pilot assessment. No downtime reduction is claimed in advance; outcomes would need to be measured against the fleet's existing process.
